How to measure yourself
Getting your measurements right is the most important part of a great fit. All you need is a soft tape measure and ideally someone to help — though most of these you can do solo.
Before you start
- Measure over the underlayer you'd wear with the finished piece — a thin t-shirt is ideal
- Stand naturally, don't hold your breath or suck in
- Keep the tape snug but not tight
The measurements
Height
Stand against a wall barefoot, mark the top of your head, measure from floor to mark.
Chest / Bust
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
Waist
Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button.
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips, usually about 20cm below your waist.
Inseam (for trousers and pants)
Measure from your crotch seam to the floor along the inside of your leg.
Head circumference (for hats)
Measure around your head just above your ears and eyebrows — where a hat would naturally sit.
Shoulder width
Measure across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the other.
Arm length
Measure from the edge of your shoulder down to your wrist with your arm slightly bent.
